Soldiers' Radio Belgrade. Young German women, so-called Blitz girls, browse through a pile of newly-arrived letters from all over Europe, all fronts and the fatherland (meanwhile, outside the frame, soldiers drag in another sack of mail). Thanks to the hit song "Lili Marleen" and the show "Young Belgrade Guard" (Der junge Belgrader Wachtposten), which connected the front and the fatherland, the Belgrade radio station quickly became a favourite among the German – and even Allied troops. The nickname of "Blitz girl" (Blitzmädel) was inspired by the insignia of German signal units, a lightning (Blitz), which signal girls, military auxiliaries (Helferinnen der Wehrmacht), wore on their uniforms as well, usually on a sleeve, tie and the cap (in the photo, they wear it on the collar, instead of a tie).
