An example of the falsification of reality (i.e. history) by the German war propaganda; this photograph was accompanied by the following text in the wartime press: "Our troops have managed once again, after heavy fighting, to neutralise one of the Bolshevik gangs that terrorised the Croatian uplands." In reality, the picture was taken in the plain, and it shows members of the Customs Border Guard posing – for the second time – with three unarmed, barefoot Roma (one of whom is a child), and staging a capture. The shot had to be repeated since the initial one turned out comical: in the previous variant of the picture, it is the child who comes out of the barn first – with a smile on his face – while the customs guards in overblown poses threaten him from both sides with weapons. In the repeated shot (enclosed here), the order of appearance of prisoners was reversed, the boy was placed way in the back (so that, because of the perspective, he would not seem so small), and all the faces got serious. This version will be also officially published, and used to present the German soldiers as effective fighters for peace and order – and the Partisans as ragged dark-skinned terrorists. An entire series of similar photographs was made on this occasion, in which the customs guards several times (rather unconvincingly) staged a capture of the "bandits", that is, of a group of harmless Roma.
