The commander of the 1st Cossack Division, Generalmajor Helmuth von Pannwitz, examines, with a stick, a dead Partisan (a member of either the XII Slavonian Division or the Eastern Group of Detachments), killed during the fighting in Slavonia, in the Đakovo area. Shortly after the Cossack division was transferred (from Syrmia) to Slavonia, the headquarters of the local Partisan corps reported the following: "Pillaging in Syrmia and around Đakovo and Brod were the so-called Cherkessian units. These are, in fact, the Germans and the Ustashas, and there are also former Red Army soldiers in these units. With their savagery, raping, slaughter and torching, they especially distinguished themselves in Syrmia, where, in one place alone, they hanged 23 Serbs and three Croats, while a large number of people were taken and sent to concentration camps. The fighting spirit of these units is very weak. The particular indecisiveness was noticed among the former Red Army soldiers. So far, 40 of them have switched to our side, with three German light machine guns, they have formed a platoon and are fighting the bandits under the command of one of their officers, and so far they have proven to be quite good. They were sent a leaflet in Russian and Turkish languages, as a call to former Red Army soldiers. In one place, the Germans hanged 14 of them and then told everyone else that the Partisans did it."
