0049 | Photo | Leibstandarte-SS "Adolf Hitler"

Operation 25. The best known SS general and commander of Hitler's bodyguards, Sepp Dietrich, standing at the gates of Yugoslavia. The SS Bodyguard "Adolf Hitler" (the future 1st SS Armoured Division and at this time an infantry brigade) participated in the invasion of Yugoslavia as part of the XL Army Corps, whose units crossed the border via Bulgaria, in the direction Kyustendil – Kriva Palanka, and Gorna Dzhumaya – Carevo Selo. The photograph was taken at the Gyueshevo – Deve Bair border crossing and shows SS Bodyguard officers and Bulgarian soldiers posing for propaganda purposes with a donkey. This moment was captured on film as well, with a mocking comment: "Only a donkey is still interested in Belgrade authorities's leaflet!" (The leaflet was put in donkey's mouth by one of SS men.) In the foreground (third from the right) is SS-Obergruppenführer Dietrich, in the centre is SS-Hauptsturmführer Gunter d'Alquen, commander of the SS War Correspondent Company (future SS Regiment "Kurt Eggers"), on the far left is SS-Hauptsturmführer Max Wünsche, Dietrich's adjutant (previously one of Hitler's adjutants), and third from the left is SS-Sturmbannführer Theodor Wisch, commander of the II Battalion (future division commander).

Operacija 25.
